The fairy of the atmospheres

By : Marie Dufour

Translation by: Esther Maresso Langlois

Within a cool autumnal ochre you perceive a solitary horseman striding next to his mount. An instant later, you are transported to the woods of Lake Beauport and are startled by the passage of a winter bird. And then, by magic, you stumble upon a strange conversation between a gathering of barnacle geese. No, you are not dreaming. You have simply entered into the paintings of Joanne Ouellet. You have been bewitched by this fairy of the atmospheres who knows so well how to capture the souls of her subjects before even putting them on paper.

 International exposure

Amerindian scenes, solo animals or never-ending landscapes, Joanne Ouellet world is inspired by nature, by what brings happiness to the eye. We would love to linger during these moments to better experience what is essential. Watercolours or acrylics, the artist's works travel. Inuit murals belonging to the minister of culture circulate throughout Europe. Here, her paintings have been shown in numerous exhibits, solo or group. As the guest artist, she as also participated in several prestigious events: The Figurative Painting Symposium ( Etang du nord on the Magdalene Island), the Lake Beauport Watercolours Symposium, the Quebec City Winter Carnaval Symposium. Joanne Ouellet was voted a member of the select « Société canadienne de l'aquarelle », Canadian watercolours society in 1991. Several of her works can be found in corporate collections: Loto-Quebec, The Federation of Les Caisses Populaires de Quebec ( bank), the Canadian institute of Quebec& etc. Her works can also be found in museums and interpretation centers.

Through the eyes of the others

Since winning the Molson first prize for a model book illustration in 1980, honors continue to punctuate the artist's accomplished career. The first prize for youth literature by the Canadian Council for the Arts, a watercolour chosen by Unicef for a greeting card, the Marie Legendre Prize (public's choice) during the lake Beauport Watercolour Symposium are all witness to the quality of her work. Joanne also chooses to share her passion from her workshop to the school.

Along with her artistic production, Joanne Ouellet teaches illustration at the school of Visual Arts at Laval University. She also meets with young peoples to talk about her fascinating profession. She shares with them some of the hundred books she has illustrated. Here and there within the colourful pages, appear her geese. Why such an interest in the feathered-friends? Because of her name OIE-let ( in French oie means goose and is pronounced wa as is the oue in her name.) deduced a young boy at one of these meetings. The explanation satisfied the audience as well as the fairy of the atmospheres.
